The East Hartford Board of Education is committed to conserving energy across its entire building portfolio, a stance supported by policy 3513.1, which can be found here.
The Department of Facilities constantly evaluates its operations to ensure optimal use of energy and natural resources, and opportunities for energy efficiency are evaluated in the planning stage of each and every project. This initiative extends to all areas and levels of the department to ensure that every opportunity to save energy and money is taken advantage of. From shutting off lighting when not in use to major window replacement projects, energy efficiency has become a core operational mantra for the Department.
The Board of Education partners with the Town of East Hartford on many enterprise-wide energy conservation projects, most notably over $12 Million of energy reducing measures as part of an Energy Performance Contract with Johnson Controls. Phase II alone, which was completed in 2012, guarantees $13.6M of energy savings over 18 years.
East Hartford has become a leader in utilizing Solar Photovoltaic technology, with solar arrays installed at (8) Board of Education properties, totaling almost one megawatt of DC production capacity. Through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) where the Town/Board are able to procure energy generated by the solar systems at a reduced rate, the Board of Education alone is able to purchase over 1,200,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year from the solar systems!
