Nine years ago at East Hartford High, a great program was started up. This program is called PRIDE. PRIDE stands for Personal Responsibility In Daily Effort. Students created and ran the program all by themselves, designing it to improve class attendance, encourage the completion of homework, and promote good classroom behavior. Students that model good academics, attendance, and behavior are rewarded once a month by being able to attend PRIDE Night.
PRIDE Nights are usually held on Thursdays, and are from 6pm- 8pm. PRIDE Night is an “open gym” night where kids can play badminton, volleyball, double-dutch, ping-pong, or basketball. There is a raffle where we give away prizes donated by local businesses. Free refreshments are served from contributing local businesses, and everyone has a great time.
There were 4 PRIDE Nights last school year. Attendance was great. On average, 200-400 students came to each PRIDE Night. In past years, we have had guest speakers like UConn basketball stars Kim Bettor and Ray Allen. We have also had a local radio station sponsor a dance for the students. PRIDE has definitely been a success; it was even nominated for several national awards!
East Hartford High’s PRIDE committee is thrilled at how successful PRIDE has been in the last eight years. In the past we have had donations from companies like Baskin Robins, Friendly’s, Brugger’s Bagels, Dunkin Donuts, and Dominoes just to name a few
If you wish to make a donation, would like to volunteer, have any new sponsor ideas, or have any questions, give our Student Council’s activities office a call at (860)-622-5326 and leave a message. We appreciate any help you can give us, and we look forward to dealing with you in the future.
