Art Classes

The purpose of the art curriculum is to expose students to a variety of media to help them acquire a better understanding of art, to give them a chance to develop techniques according to individual interest and potential and to prepare those students who, upon completion of the art program, would plan to major in art in a commercial or fine arts higher education program. Materials will be provided for small projects, but extensive projects must be financed by the individual student.

Each art course is one semester in length and earns one-half credit.

Grade 9-12

General Art I 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 847, Sem B 848
Prerequisite: Open to grade 9 to 12 students.
Description: This is the first art course for students who wish to take an art class at the high school level. This introductory course will provide hands-on experience with drawing, painting and three-dimensional art projects.

General Art II 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 849, Sem B 850
Prerequisite: Open to students who have successfully taken General Art I with a "B" average and/or permission of the instructor. Description: This is a class for serious art students who have met the criteria of the General Art I class and wish to continue developing their artistic skills through advanced assignments in drawing, painting and three-dimensional art work.

All of the Following Courses Require Genreal Art I

Grades 10, 11 and 12

Ceramics I 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 851, Sem B 852
Prerequisite: Open to Grades 10, 11 and 12 only.
Description: The course is an introduction to the basic materials and techniques of hand-forming clay, which include coil, slab, and pinch. Various surface decoration and glazing techniques are explored.

Ceramics II 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 853, Sem B 854
Prerequisite: Ceramics I, Open to Grades 10, 11 and 12 only.
Description: The course is a continuation of Ceramics 1. The student will progress from hand-built pieces to working on the potter’s wheel. The student will be expected to attempt more challenging work.

Computer Animation 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 877, Sem B 878
Prerequisite: Open to grades 11&12; Credit in Art I and Computer Graphics and recommendations of both teachers.
Description: This course introduces students to the animation program Lightwave. Students plan, develop and create 3D animation clips.  Students are introduced to film and animation processes including lighting, camera angle and movement. Ability to work independently is required

Crafts 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 855, Sem B 856
Prerequisite: Open to Grades 10, 11 and 12 only.
Description: The course is an introduction to a variety of techniques used in the production of decorative and functional items. The properties of the following materials may be explored: natural fibers, leather, wood, metals, glass and found objects.

Drawing I 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 857, Sem B 858
Prerequisite: Open to Grades 10, 11 and 12 only.
Description: This course is the development of basic drawing skills and may include the use of pastels, ink, pencil and other drawing media.

Drawing II 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 859, Sem B 860
Prerequisite: Drawing I, Open to Grades 10, 11 and 12 only.
Description: This course is a combination of skills developed in Drawing I.  Assignments may include figure drawing and portraiture.

Drawing III 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 861, Sem B 862
Prerequisite: Drawing I and II, Open to Grades 11 and 12 only.
Description: This course is a combination of skills developed in Drawing I and II. Assignments will include drawings in mixed media. Students may elect a particular media for advanced study on an individual basis.
Assistance will be given to portfolio preparation and career guidance.

Painting I 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 863, Sem B 864
Prerequisite: Open to Grades 10, 11 and 12 only.
Description: This course is the development of basic painting skills using water-based paints. Watercolor techniques will be emphasized.

Painting II 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 865, Sem B 866
Prerequisite: Painting I.
Description: This course is a continuation of the skills developed in Painting I with introduction of Acrylic Technique.

Sculpture I 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 871, Sem B 872
Prerequisite: Open to Grades 10, 11 and 12 only.
Description: The course is an introduction to the basic materials and methods of sculpture such as modeling, carving and casting to form three dimensional and relief projects.

Sculpture II 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 873, Sem B 874
Prerequisite: Sculpture I, Open to Grades 10, 11 and 12 only.
Description: The course is a continuation of Sculpture I. The student will be expected to attempt more challenging work.

Textile Design 1 Semester 1/2 credit
Code: Sem A 875 Sem B 876
Prerequisite: Open to Grades 10, 11 and 12 only.
Description: This course deals with the fundamentals of working with fibers, fabrics and yards. The techniques may include macrame, stitchery, batik, knitting, quilting, stenciling and weaving.
