East Hartford High School students will have the opportunity to travel to France during February vacation of 2011. Amy Berman and John Bacon have organized this nine-day trip which stops in Paris, Loire Valley, Saint Michel and Normandy. The all-inclusive price of $2,842 covers the cost of all transportation, airport taxes, accommodations, tour guides, two meals per day (normally breakfast and dinner), and much more. EHHS teachers and administrators will serve as chaperones: at least one chaperone will accompany every six students. There will be a meeting for interested students and their parents in the East Lecture Hall of EHHS on Monday, March 8th, at 7:00 PM.
DAY 1-2 FLY TO PARIS. Overnight flight to Europe. Begin exploring Paris, the captivating capital of France.
DAY 3 PARIS-LOUVRE. From the romantic cafés surrounding the Arc de Triomphe to the sweeping Champs-Elysées, the Eiffel Tower, and Les Invalides, join a local guide for a view of the City of Lights. Tour the tremendous Notre Dame Cathedral, home of the fictional hunchback. Smile at da Vinci's Mona Lisa in the Louvre Museum. Ascend to the top of the EiffelTower for a bird's eye view of the city.
DAY 4 PARIS-ORSAY Enjoy the wealth of Impressionist art at the Musee d’Orsay. This evening, enjoy a walking tour of Sacre Coeur and the artists' quarter of Montmartre, recognizable in many of Toulouse-Lautrec's posters.
DAY 5 VERSAILLES-CHARTRES. Picture the flow of royalty through the vast grounds and gardens of Louis XIV's Palace of Versailles, and en route Seize the Château!: A lively role-play puts you in the shoes of the monarchy, clergy, nobility, bourgeoisie, or peasantry to explore the issues underlying the French Revolution. Tour the Hall of Mirrors, the royal apartments and the gardens. Admire the interior of Chartres Cathedral en route to the Loire Valley.
DAY 6 LOIRE CHATEAUX Appreciate centuries of history in the beautiful Château of Chenonceau. Explore the Château of Amboise, then visit Clos Lucé, da Vinci's manor, which now houses 40 of his inventions. Visit Tours to create your own delicacies in Bon Appetit!:Slice, dice, and stir! Savor the French country lifestyle by creating (and eating) traditional LoireValley cuisine.
DAY 7 MONT ST. MICHEL. While on the BretonCoast, visit Mont St. Michel, a fortified island adorned by a monastery. Continue to St. Malo, city by the sea. Enjoy Medieval Merriment!:Grab your dancing shoes and learn the visual language of medieval dance. Discover the important role it played during French medieval times, where there was a dance for every occasion, and a special meaning behind each step in the choreography.
DAY 8 NORMANDY. Admire Normandy's striking coastal landscape, the battleground of WWII's D-Day. Experience the Soldiers' Stories:Step into the shoes of U.S. servicemen as they land in Normandy on D-Day. Learn about their lives and their experiences to gain personal and historical perspective. At the AmericanMilitaryCemetery and MemorialMuseum of the Battle of Normandy, pause to remember the soldiers. Return to Paris.
