Leadership: Our students will focus on listening, adapting to any situation and thinking outside the box to solve problems. Together we will participate in team building activities every day. ALL activities have a purpose to train our leaders in a skill that will serve as the foundation of their role as a mentor. We will take time out to focus on individual leaders and how they view themselves in an effort to foster a stronger sense of self confidence. Establishing group norms in the beginning of the program will allow us to have honest conversations about how we react as leaders now and then how we can grow.
Communication: Students will gain skills in presentation, sharing of ideas, reflection and listening through specific activities. This focus is to teach the students how to appropriately communicate with underclassmen when facilitating lessons in Connections class, professionally communicate when offered educational opportunities and reflect on their own experiences to understand the bigger picture.
Community &Service: Students will participate in several activities regarding the meaning of service learning. They will engage in activities in the topics of advocacy, participate in designated community projects in East Hartford and in the hornet community. The leaders will be challenged to think about how their actions can affect change in the community in a positive or negative way. Through our relationships with community partners the students will be able to experience what authentic service is.
College Readiness: Our students will participate in a variety of activities that concentrate on student ownership of learning. We will engage the students in goal setting, time management techniques, SAT prep, study skills and collaborative learning to prepare for college level expectations. Our leaders will be made aware of the appropriate post-secondary opportunities, financial aid options and procedures and the application/admission process through our school based activities and college visits.
